French, Late 17th Century, Refectory Table

$8 900

An exceptional, French, late 17th century refectory table from a monastery. This beautiful table is in lovely original condition with an aged patina. It is crafted in oak - rustic and solid and carrying the memories of centuries. The long dimensions and sturdy construction were intended to facilitate communal dining which was central to monastic life - the wooden slides on the side of the table were used for stowing away dishes. The refectory table would function superbly as a console / sideboard in a large living room or as a serving table in a large dining space. It would sit well in a large hallway or entrance way or could be placed as a sofa table behind a large settee with lamps on either end perhaps. A prestige piece for a discerning home.
